Del prólogo (Prologue), textual:

Considering how many fools can calculate, it is surprising that it should be thought either a difficult or a tedious task for any other fool to learn how to master the same tricks.

Some calculus-tricks are quite easy. Some are enormously difficult. The fools who write the textbooks of advanced mathematics — and they are mostly clever fools — seldom take the trouble to show you how easy the easy calculations are. On the contrary, they seem to desire to impress you with their tremendous cleverness by going about it in the most difficult way.

Being myself a remarkably stupid fellow, I have had to unteach myself the difficulties, and now beg to present to my fellow fools the parts that are not hard. Master these thoroughly, and the rest will follow. What one fool can do, another can.

El método, en tres movimientos

1. Desarmar el símbolo primero. El Capítulo I no enseña matemática: traduce d y ∫ a lenguaje común antes de que puedan asustar. Ver notación.
2. Construir la intuición con analogías cotidianas. Los infinitesimales se introducen con minutos, segundos y monedas — no con límites ni épsilon-delta. Ver infinitesimales.
3. Derivar todo desde primeros principios, con ejemplos concretos. “Now let us see how, on first principles, we can differentiate some simple algebraical expression” (Cap. IV). Nunca una regla caída del cielo.

El epílogo: la defensa anticipada

Thompson sabía exactamente a quién iba a molestar. Del Epilogue and Apologue:

It may be confidently assumed that when this tractate “Calculus made Easy” falls into the hands of the professional mathematicians, they will (if not too lazy) rise up as one man, and damn it as being a thoroughly bad book. Of that there can be, from their point of view, no possible manner of doubt whatever. It commits several most grievous and deplorable errors.

First, it shows how ridiculously easy most of the operations of the calculus really are.

El “error” del libro es su virtud. Esa inversión —el rigor como barrera de entrada frente a la claridad como acto de generosidad— es la lectura que sobrevive al tema.

Aplicación fuera de la matemática

El patrón concepto → símbolo (nunca al revés) se traslada directo a:

• Documentación técnica — explicar el problema que resuelve una herramienta antes que su sintaxis.
• Diseño de APIs — el nombre debe cargar el modelo mental, no la implementación.
• Mentoría — quien aprende useMemo sin entender qué es una referencia está en la misma posición que quien escribe ∫ sin saber que está sumando pedacitos.
